Footnotes

  • 朝妻船図蒔絵印籠 銘「常嘉斎」 18世紀

Provenance: Lt. Col. J. B. Gaskell collection, no.780.
Purchased from Nihon Token, London, 1988.
    Wrangham collection, no.1916.

The design is taken from a design album by Jokasai owned by Eskenazi Ltd. The same design can be seen in a painting by Hanabusa Itcho, who once painted a picture of a courtesan of Asazuma, a harbour on Lake Biwa. The painting was a covert satire of the mistress of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the fifth shogun, and Itcho was jailed and later sent into internal exile.
