Footnotes

  • 清康熙 白地礬紅彩描金模團龍紋長頸瓶

    Provenance 來源:
    Sotheby Parke-Bernet, Hong Kong, 20 May 1981, lot 858

Kangxi vases of this form are unique and made rarer by the addition of a finely moulded dragon motif. The design at the neck is fashioned to resemble metal-mountings, which are often found on vases to protect the rim from wearing and damage. This motif appears on another Kangxi wucai vase, illustrated in Kangxi Porcelain Wares from the Shanghai Museum Collection, Shanghai, 1998, p.181, no.119, pl.119.

The only other known example which closely resembles the current lot, is in the Palace Museum, Beijing, see Miscellaneous Enamelled Porcelains Plain Tricoloured Porcelains. The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Shanghai, 2009, p.11, no.9 (fig.1). The example in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is also decorated with gold gilding and iron-red with Chenghua apocryphal mark at the base, albeit with different decorative motifs.
