Footnotes

  • 清乾隆 段泥桃核式水盂
    刻「庚子年甲申月丁酉日記 西王母賜漢武桃 宣和殿 愛閒老人手製」

The left inscription in zhuanshu reads 'xiwangmu ci hanwu tao xuanhedian' and can be translated as 'Queen Mother of the West bestowed a peach upon the Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty, Xuanhe Hall'.

The right inscription reads 'Gengzinian jiashenyue dingyouri ji' – 'Recorded on the dingyou day of the jiashen month in the gengzi year'. 'Ai xian lao ren shou zhi' is engraved at the bottom rim, meaning 'Handmade by the Old Man Who Loves Leisure.' Both are in kaishu.

According to The Yixing Historical Accounts of Past Events, the 'Old Man Who Loves Leisure' (real name unrecorded) was a potter active between the reigns of Ming dynasty emperors Jiajing and Wanli. He was noted for his zisha and grey-bodied Yixing washers decorated with lightly crackled glazes.

A closely related example is in the collection of the Percival David Foundation, published in the Royal Academy of Arts Catalogue of the International Exhibition of Chinese Art 1935-6, London, 1935, p. 89, no. 1106. It is also highlighted by Rosemary Scott in Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art: A Guide to the Collection, London, 1989, p. 92, pl. 91.

For a similar example from the Qing Court collection, preserved in the Palace Museum, Beijing, see Yixing Zisha Wares at the Palace Museum, Beijing, 2009, p. 229, pl. 138.

See also K.S. Lo, The Stonewares of Yixing from the Ming Period to the Present Day, London, 1986, p. 142, pl. LVI for a 'peach stone' brushwasher with bluish-grey 'junyao' glaze in his private collection. For a larger example sold auction, see the brushwasher from the Mr and Mrs Gerard Hawthorn Collection, sold in these rooms, 28 November 2011, lot 258.

Royal Academy of Arts Catalogue of the International Exhibition of Chinese Art 1935-6,倫敦,1935年,頁89,號1106 和蘇玫瑰著 Percival David Foundation. A Guide to the Collection,倫敦,1989年,頁92,圖版91。

    另一件清宮舊藏例子,可參考北京故宮博物院編,《故宮博物院藏宜興紫砂》,頁229,圖版138。

羅桂祥先生的私人收藏中,也有一件內施釉變綠釉的桃核洗,見K.S. Lo, The Stonewares of Yixing from the Ming Period to the Present Day,倫敦,1986年,頁142,圖版LVI.以及香港邦瀚斯,《好善簃珍藏宜興紫砂》第一部分,2011年11月28日,拍品編號258。
