An inscribed 'chengni yan' inkstone
Signed Gu Erniang The even beige-coloured stone intricately carved in low relief with a pair of mandarin ducks amidst foliage, a six-character zhuanshu inscription carved within a rectangular panel on the left side, the underside carved with a sprig of lingzhi fungus, hardwood box and cover. 12.8cm long.
The inscription translates as 'Made at Wumen by Gu Erniang'.
A native of Suzhou, Gu Erniang's birth and death dates are unknown. She was active during the Yongzheng and Qianlong eras. Married into a family renowned for making inkstones, she was a disciple of Gu Delin. Gu Erniang subsequently succeeded and promoted the art of inkstone making due to her husband's early death.
