Footnotes

  • The inscriptions incised on the bases of the two teapots are translated as 'the mountain is steep like a razor, by ziqi', and another 'the summer is cooling down in the midday, by yigong'.

Chen Ziqi is the name of a distinguished potter who was recorded as having lived in the late Ming / early Qing dynasty. For further information on the artist, see lot 549.

The two-character mark incised below the handle reads junde, literally translating as 'gentleman's virtue', of which the name is unrecorded in historical Yixing connoisseurship but is referred to as a specific type of miniature teapot by modern-day Yixing connoisseurs.
