Footnotes

  • Chen Mingyuan is considered one of the most significant potters in the history of the art of Yixing stoneware. His superb craftsmanship has been so highly regarded that connoisseurs and scholars ranked him second only to the Ming dynasty Yixing master, Shi Dabin. He is also undoubtedly the most versatile potter whose works also include pieces for the scholar's table and other objects simulating fruits, vegetables and nuts, an Yixing 'double-gourd' brushwasher with Chen Mingyuan's signature was also sold in these rooms, see Yixing Stoneware from the Mr and Mrs Gerard Hawthorn Collection, Part I, 28 November 2011, lot 209.
