Footnotes

  • Neither the name of Wang Zhiyuan and Ji An were recorded in texts of traditional Yixing connoisseurship. However, in the Yangxian shahu tukao, A Pictorial Study of Yangxian Potter Teapots, where the pictorial volume has never been retrieved with only the textual volume reprinted by the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1998, Li Jingkang and Zhang Hong recorded a same seal mark impressed under the handle of an incised teapot made by Qu Yingshao (1778-1849), from the collection of Bishan huguan, or Bishan Teapots Gallery.

However, based on the fact that the name Ji An is not recorded as belonging to Qu Yingshao in any of the written texts which list this well-known scholar and his various designations or hao, Hugh Moss and Gerard Tsang suggest that Ji An is rather the name of an unrecorded Yixing potter commissioned by Qu Yingshao to make teapots for him through his friend Deng Kui in Yixing than the scholar himself, see Gerard Tsang and Hugh Moss, Arts from the Scholar's Studio, p.140, pl.109, also illustrated in Gerard C.C. Tsang ed.,Yixing Pottery, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1981, p.121, pl.61.
