    LITERATURE:
    A. Smart, Allan Ramsay: A Complete Catalogue of His Paintings, ed. J. Ingamells, New Haven and London, 1999, no. 197, p.122, fig. 441

Youngest son of William Glanville (formerly Evelyn). Married Jane, Countess of Rothes, in 1766. Died Brighton 1770.

At the time Ramsay painted this attractive portrait of George Glanville the artist was coming to the end of his first long and very successful London period. The young officer seems lost in thought and his detachment from the viewer is accentuated by Ramsay's choice of a rather formal composition.
