A very fine and well detailed miniature ship model of a British 70-gun ship-of-the-line
British, 20th century
the hull built up from the solid, with a coopered bottom, the topsides with a black waist, and black bands between the gun decks, the cannons fixed and gun-ports raised. The head rails lead up to the bow to support a carved figurehead. The transom and quarter galleries are pierced and decorated with numerous windows and a balcony at the stern. The deck is boxwood veneer which is fitted with a number of details including: anchors, capstan, cannons, ladders, ship's boat amidships, belfry and other details. Rigged with three masts, spars, stun'sail booms, bowsprit, spanker boom and gaff, standing and running rigging. Displayed on a pair of wood cradles within a glass and brass case with mahogany base.
