An illustration to a ragamala series: Madhumadhavi ragini
Opaque watercolor and gold on paper, Deccan, c. 1720-40

The bright white and richly decorated terrace stands in dramatic contrast against the ominous night sky. The maidens hold each other tight as they view the blackened sky streaked with lightening and silhouetted clouds. The love lorn maiden gestures with a raised hand that her chance for an evening tryst has been thwarted by the powerful storm.
