Footnotes

  • This page was likely part of an album that would have been assembled for Western patrons in the 19th or early 20th century. The fanciful inscription at the top "Taj Mahal wife of Muhammad Shah Jahan" is not a title that would have been used in a tradition manuscript and the date and artist indicated in the bottom panel "The hand of Mas'ud Deccani 997 (1589A.D)" is also not consistent with the style of the painting or the likely date of execution.
