Portrait of an officer
Opaque watercolor and gold on paper, Mughal, circa 1660-1680
Against a plain back ground with wisps of foliage by his feet, the officer rests on a long staff with both hands. He wears a transparent jama bound by a red and gold sash over pink and gold embroidered pantaloons. His noble stature is confirmed by the inlaid gold kattar and ram's head dagger secured in the sash. A shield and sword are suspended on his left side. He wears a green and gold turban bound by white cloth and adorned by feathers. His face is finely detailed with a fuzzy beard and delicate moustache that is out swept.
image: 8 ½ x 6 in. (21.6 x 15.2 cm), folio: 15 ½ x 11 ½ in. (39.4 x 29 cm)
