A large wooden casket
Sri Lanka, 18th/19th century
In the form of an elongated octagon, the deep hinged lid carved with a central ringed rosette surrounded by scrolling floral forms and other flower heads, the side panels with palmettes within scrolling vines, set above the base with each panel carved with repeating vertical acanthus stems, the whole raised on block feet.
26 x 49 ¼ x 32 in. (46 x 125.1 x 81.3 cm)


  • The octagonal form and treatment of the floral forms are consistent with smaller manuscript covers, caskets and ceiling decorations from Sri Lanka, see Ananda Coomaraswamy, Mediaeval Sinhalese Art, Broad Campden, 1908, pls. XV, XXXVII and XLIII.
