Footnotes

  • A head of Jina with the same treatment of the hair and facial type is in the Cleveland Museum of Art, see Stan Czuma, Kushan Sculpture: Images from Early India, Cleveland, 1985, no. 4. In discuss of the hair type (ibid, p. 54) Czuma argues against the suggestion by Johanna Engelberta Lohuizen-De Leeuw (The Scythian period, 1949) that this alone indicated the earlier period Gandharan influence on Kushan sculpture in the early 2nd century, instead he also considered the facial type to suggest a late 2nd century dating of the Cleveland head. Also compare with a closely related head of Buddha in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, (25.85).
