A thangka of the Fifth Dalai Lama
Distemper on cloth, Tibet, 17th/18th century
With his right hand raised in the gesture of reassurance abhaya mudra> and his left hand resting in his lap supporting a black begging bowl, he wears a pandita hat and a meditation cloak over his patchwork robes, he sits atop a cushioned throne with a table of ritual objects in front, flanked by Sri Devi and Green Tara, and worldly protectors flanking Mahakala at the bottom. Above center is Buddha in the teaching mode flanked by a Panchen Lama and another lineage master above Ghuyasamaja and Amitabha at this shoulders.
