Seated in dhyanasana, dressed in the robes of lay nobility with identifying turban gathered in a cylindrical topknot with separately pieced tresses falling down over his shoulders surmounting a face rendered with a stern expression of staring eyes and knitted brow, his right hand reaching over his knee in the earth-touching mudra as his left had rests in his lap.

Footnotes

  • Two thangkas depicting King Trisong Detsun contemporary to the present lot show the ruler with a similar style turban with a triratna ornament in the front. (see himalayanart.org #774 and 820) The present lot has a short tang in the same position that could have supported a separately cast element that would make the identification more likely. Compare with a related example of Songsten Gampo in cast gilt bronze in the Capital Museum, Beijing (see himalayanart.org #58903)
