A thangka of Maitreya and consort
Distemper on cloth, Tibeto-Chinese, 19th century
The white bodhisattva with his arms crossed holding a kundika and a khalsa embraced his red consort who holds a pair of skull cups brimming with nectar, dressed in multi-colored silks and seated on a pick lotus platform rising from a lake, surrounded by twenty repeating forms varying only in the color of the nimbus. Two line Tibetan inscription in gilt on black in bottom register. Stretched and mounted with Japanese silks.
