Footnotes

  • Two albums containing seventy-two Tanjore double portraits, formerly in the collections of Thomas Edwards of Halifax and Sir Thomas Phillips, illustrate the manner in which these paintings were acquired and bound in albums. The rendering of the wife, and the treatment of the clouds, trees and shadows in these works are very similar to the style of the present example (see Sotheby's, London, November 17,1974, lot 770).

    Provenance:
    Private Collection, Los Angeles
