Opaque watercolor and gold on paper, Late Mughal, Late 18th century
Against a star-filled night sky, Krishna as the hero, is seated at the top of a hill holding the tusks of the vanquished elephant, his victory is celebrated by two attendants holding spears, while a crowned figure, possible Lakshmana joins his hands in veneration. The elephant is slumped by a lake and small ring-tailed mongooses approach nervously and one seizes his severed trunk. Mounted in a blue album page with red nasta'liq inscription at the top.
