FIRST EDITION. ONE OF THE MOST SUBSTANTIAL AND DEFINITIVE WORKS TO COME FROM THE EARLY CALCUTTA PRESSES. Sir William Ouseley, Sir John Malcolm, and Louis Langlés are mentioned in the preface as commending Burhn's work. Roebuck was a captain in the Madras Native Infantry and teacher of Hindustani, Persian, Arabic and other languages at the East India Company College of Fort William (who subscribed for 40 copies of this dictionary). The subscription list contains many names of interest, including a substantial number of native Indian subscribers.
