2 parts in one volume. Folio (340 x 235 mm). *10 a-z8 A-P8 Q-R6 S-Cc8 Dd6; 2a-2d8 2e10 3a-3f8. Each part with title page featuring large woodcut printer's device, numerous criblé initials in two sizes, title and first few gatherings with capital letters heightened in yellow and a few initials rubricated in red. Period calf, edges decorated in red and brown. Gathering x with pale waterstain at fore-edge, upper joint cracked, loss to first compartment of spine, lower cover particularly rubbed, old paper shelfmark on spine.
Provenance: Feliz Ponce de Leon (name within decorative manuscript banner on title, heightened in yellow); occasional early marginalia; D. Famelis (faint ownership inscription at foot of title); Salliot (ownership inscription on title); Madame la Comtesse des Courtils (19th century armorial bookplate); Sayre Macneil [1886-1961] of Los Angeles (ownership inscription on front free endpaper dated 1908); pencil note "Dawson 1949" on rear pastedown; Estelle Doheny [1875-1958] (morocco bookplate).

"THE MONUMENTAL FIRST ESTIENNE EDITION OF THE BIBLE as well as Robert Estienne's first project as a scholar-printer (Schreiber). The second part includes an index and explanation of proper names in Hebrew, Chaldaic, Greek and Latin.
This edition is frequently considered the first genuine attempt at a critical edition of the Vulgate, and marks the first appearance of the printer's large device featuring an olive tree and St. Paul. The criblé initials attributed to Geoffroy Tory also make their first appearance here. Darlow & Moule 6109; Schreiber 37.
