Folio (313 x 197 mm). a10 b-x8 y10 z8 &8 98 Rx8 A-Z8 Et8 Co8 Ru8 2A-2C8. Double column, roman and some Greek type. Decorative initials. Early 19th century half calf, early vellum index tabs preserved. Repairs to first 2 leaves and to colophon with small losses, title with blank areas replaced, scattered stains, few marginal repairs and small wormholes, binding worn at extremities.

VERY RARE FIRST EDITION. Calepino's name became nearly synonymous with dictionary in 16th century Europe, as Webster's was in 20th century America. It accumulated additional languages as it went through dozens of sixteenth century editions, until the 1590 Basel edition featured equivalents for 11 languages in all. By 1785 it had been reissued some 150 times: the longest-running dictionary of the early modern period (Dewald, Europe 1450 to 1789, 2004, p 140). Adams C202.
