1951 BMW R51/3
amended
1951 BMW R51/3
Frame no. 525096
BMW returned to motorcycle production in 1948 and two years later re-introduced their R51 500cc twin, basically a prewar machine with mechanical improvements including a four-speed gearbox. The /2 model was further revised, as was the R51/3 for 1951. The engine unit prefigured the BMW restyle that would be used through the 1960s. New front forks, new brakes and new overall styling made for an attractive motorcycle, which sold steadily. It was replaced by the much-revised R50 in 1954, making the /3 a relatively uncommon model today. This nicely presented example is equipped for two-up work with a second sprung saddle and accessory luggage carrier.
