Removed from a cupboard
Both carved with the figures of saints beneath a flowerhead-carved canopy of two pointed arches spaced by columns, the first panel carved to the left with John the Baptist, a lamb in his left hand, a camel-hair tunic over his right arm, the figure of St. Nicholas on his left, wearing a bishop's mitre and carrying a crozier, three children in a barrel at his feet, the second panel carved with St. John the Evangelist, a dragon-like creature at his feet, his right arm raised in blessing above a snake emerging from a chalice, being offered to him by an Eastern female figure, possibly meant to depict the priest of the Temple of Diana, 33.5cm wide x 49cm high, (2)
Estimate:
£1,500 - 2,000
US$ 2,300 - 3,000
€1,800 - 2,300

Footnotes

  • The saints depicted on these panels were amongst the most popular in Medieval and Early Modern Europe. The three children emerging from the barrel at the feet of St. Nicholas are a reference to his discovery - and reincarnation - of three dismembered children in a barrel at an inn.
