An unusually large James I/Charles I oak and marquetry panel-back armchair
Leeds area, Yorkshire, circa 1620-40
The back panel, within a moulded frame, decorated with scrolling stylized flowerheads, pomegranates and birds, with each motif in contre-partie marquetry, headed by the inlaid initials 'IP', the arched double-scroll cresting carved with stylized leaves and integral S-scroll carved toprail, with similar carved detail to the uprights above the arms, together with scroll carved ears, the downswept shaped open arms on bulbous ring-turned front supports, the boarded seat raised on null-carved rails, with baluster-turned front legs, joined by channel-moulded stretchers, 66cm wide x 57.5cm deep x 133.5cm high, (25.5" wide x 22.5" deep x 52.5" high)
