Circa 1570-80
Having a plain panelled back with broad channel-moulded top rail with delicate gauge-carved edge detail, the uprights surmounted by integral scroll-carved finials, the scroll-ended open arms raised on fluted baluster-turned front supports, the boarded seat raised on deep channel-moulded and scroll-cut seat rails, raised on conforming fluted baluster-turned legs, joined by stretchers with a chamfered front and rear edge, 55cm wide x 53cm deep x 110cm high, (21.5" wide x 20.5" deep x 43" high)

Footnotes

  • This armchair demonstrates a high degree of sophisticated, refined Elizabethan design, of apparent simplicity. The decoration is conservative, reserved just for the top rail, seat rails and front supports, with the exception of the decorative and unique scroll finials to the rear uprights. The steep rake design creates a chair that is attractive from all angles, stable in use and extremely comfortable! Compare with the simplicity of Lots 225, 253.

Exhibited: Beedham Antiques Ltd, Essentially English, BADA 90th Anniversary Exhibition.
