Ian Abdulla's paintings often represent his life experiences growing up on the Murray River in South Australia. Each work in this suite of 'story telling' paintings depicts a recollection of an activity from his early life set within the landscape. They all employ his use of descriptive text in the centre above or below figurative images, set on flattened foreground.

This suite was commissioned by respected Australian contemporary art curator Juliana Engberg for an exhibition in Melbourne entitled The Australia Projects for the Federation Festival. For this project Engberg commissioned seven contemporary artists to respond to the puzzle of national identity: Ian W. Abdullah, Greg Creek, Fiona MacDonald, Liu Xiao Xian, Margaret Morgan, Patricia Piccinini and Tony Trembath.
