Footnotes

  • Jean Parisot de la Valette (1495 - 1568) was born into the noble Valette family in Quercy, an important family in France for many generations, various members having participated in the Crusades. He was also a distant cousin of Jean Louis de Nogaret de La Valette, first Duke of Epernon.
In 1557 La Valette became the 49th Grand Master of the Order of Malta and of the Knights Hospitaller, titles he retained until his death.
Among his achievements La Valette is noted for joining the Langue de Provence and commanding the resistance against the Ottomans at the Great Seige of Malta in 1565.
