after a design by Charles Bevan,
line-inlaid and with ebonised and fruitwood stylised scrolling foliage, roundel and flowerhead inlay, the brass galleried top inset with shallow pen and ink compartments, over a tooled leather inset writing slope, enclosing a satinwood interior with four pigeon holes and three drawers, above a panelled side door enclosing four mahogany drawers, on ring turned and octagonal columnar front supports, terminating in ceramic castors, 64cm wide x 64cm deep x 87cm high, (25" wide x 25" deep x 34" high)

Footnotes

  • The present lot is very similar to Charles Bevan's twin designs for a 'Gothic revival' davenport which were first published in the "Building News" in 1865. The architectural appearance of the columnar supports, the chamfered and fielded panelling, and the geometric inlay in light and dark woods are all distinctive recurrent features of Bevan's furniture. Such aesthetic elements, evidenced by the present lot and aforementioned designs, are also apparent in the pieces of furniture supplied for Titus Salt Junior between 1865 and 1866, and later installed in his Gothic mansion, Milner Field, in 1872. This particular commission was executed by the Leeds cabinetmakers, Marsh and Jones, following Bevan's comprehensive designs.

    Also, a fine 'Gothic revival' oak and inlaid sideboard, manufactured in 1865 by a firm called C. Seddon & Co following designs by John Pollard Seddon (1827 - 1906), has various conforming stylistic elements to the present lot (pages 88-9 & 112-3, Jeremy Cooper, "Victorian and Edwardian Furniture and Interiors", 1987).
