the brass three quarter galleried top above a tooled leather inset writing slope, enclosing a birds' eye maple lined interior with five pigeon holes, over four graduating side drawers, the panelled front flanked by scrolled corbel capped square section columns, on a concave base terminating in ring turned bun feet and sunken castors, the top drawer stamped: 'HOWARD & SONS, BERNERS ST,' with a printed paper label to the inside bearing: 'HOWARD & SONS... 25, 26 & 27 BERNERS STREET, LONDON' 62cm wide x 65cm deep x 83cm high, (24" wide x 25.5" deep x 32.5" high)

  • John Howard originally established his firm at 24 Lemon Street in 1820. By 1854 he was established in the heart of the West End at 22 and 36 Berners Street. The firm grew to become one of the most fashionable and successful of the 19th century, participating in many of the International Exhibitions for the remainder of the century. They employed their eclectic styles working for many important clients providing furniture for important houses such as Sudbury Hall in Derbyshire, Elton Hall, Huntingdonshire and Stokesay Court, Shropshire.
