An early-19th century sailor's commemorative patch box
Of tinned copper, the lid engraved with the inscription "When this you see remember me though many miles we distant be" surrounding a central silver cartouche with the initials "EH", the base engraved with a picture of a 16 gun British warship and inscribed "Shark", diameter 5cm.

Footnotes

  • HMS Shark was a 16 gun sloop, launched in 1779 and used from 1803 as the receiving ship at the Jamaica station. She sank at her moorings at Port Royal in 1818.
