An unusual English ivory part chess set
by Gartmore, 19th century,
one side stained black, the other side left natural, the white side complete, the black side missing one knight and two rooks, kings with beaded centres and crowns, queens with ball finials, bishops with egg-shaped finials, knights as carved horses' heads, rooks as turrets with black stained roundel decoration, pawns with ball finials, each piece with inset gilt-metal label marked Gartmore and with scallop shell cipher,
the king 9.5cm high, the pawn 5.5cm high (29 pieces).
