Footnotes

  • The work of Edward Onslow Ford encapsulated the New Sculpture movement of late Victorian England. It heralded the move away from the staunch Neo-Classicism and emphasis on stoic portraiture that had been the dominating fashion in British sculpture, and pushed towards a style which conveyed expression and vitality. This present example was created by Ford in 1887 and is characteristic of the grace and effortlessness that the New Sculpture artists were aiming to promote.
