A pair of original Customs Form 2 Declaration of Ownership certificates. The first, dated 13.May.1893 to Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, of Marlborough House London and Sandringham. The second, dated 1.Mar.1911 to King George the Fifth. Both certificates signed in ink and witnessed. (2)

  • In 1892 Albert Edward, Prince of Wales and Commodore of the Royal Yacht Squadron, commissioned the designer GL Watson to build him a First Class cutter with the aim of revitalising big boat racing. Constructed at Henderson's yard on the Clyde, she was launched in 1893 and was an immediate success. The Prince's rivalry with his nephew, the Kaiser, eventually soured his enjoyment for racing and in 1897 he sold her to Sir Richard Bulkeley BT, who cut down her rig and used her for cruising, however the Prince bought her back in 1902 and continued to use her until his death in 1910. His son, now King George V, inherited the yacht and on discovering that there had been no bill of sale to Sir Richard Bulkeley, got him to write to the Registrars in Glasgow and a new certificate of ownership was issued in March 1911. The King continued to race the vessel before and after WW1, upgrading and modifying her rig several times until his death in 1935. Under the terms of his will, she was stripped of her fittings and scuttled off St Catherine's Point on July 9th.
