Footnotes

  • Admiral Sir Edward Augustus Inglefield KCB FRS FRGS RN (1820-1894)

Born in Cheltenham, the eldest son of Rear Admiral Samuel Hood Inglefield, he graduated from the Royal Naval College, Portsmouth in 1834. In 1853 he was appointed to Command Lady Franklin's steam yacht Isabel in the Arctic, as part of the first search for Sir John Franklin. Although unsuccessful, he returned to publish a book A Summer Search for Sir John Franklin ~ with a peep into the Polar Basin which resulted in him being elected Fellow of the Royal Society and also receiving the Royal Geographical Society gold medal as well as awards from the Paris Society and from Napoleon lll. He returned to the Arctic twice further between 1853-54, in command of HMS Pheonix, where he supported the Belcher Expedition and brought home the news of the discovery of the North West Passage. He served during the Crimean War in the Baltic and after his return to England was promoted Captain and between 1861-64 took command of the Coast Guard guardship HMS Majestic moored in the Mersey at Liverpool.

He was appointed Rear Admiral in 1869 and was subsequently 2nd in command in the Mediterranean and Superintendent at Malta until 1875, when he was raised to Vice Admiral. From 1878-9 he commanded the North American fleet and he retired as Admiral in 1885 and was awarded KCB at the diamond Jubilee. He was brought back from retirement as Chairman of the Arts section of the Naval exhibition at Chelsea in 1891, and died at Kensington in 1894.

A collector of Venetian glass, gifted amateur artist and inventor, he was responsible for the Inglefield Anchor (exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851) and the Inglefield hydraulic steering gear amongst others.

The Nile Medal may well have belonged to his father, Rear Admiral Samuel Inglefield, who joined the Navy in 1791, the later medal from a descendant.
