• The arms are said to be those of Field Marshall George HAY, 8th Marquess of Tweedale (1787-1876) and Lady Susan MONTAGU (1797-1870), married in 1816, Lady Susan was the daughter of William Montagu, 5th Duke of Manchester.
  
  Hay had a distinguished military career, most notably he fought in the Peninsular Wars in 1806. He fought in the Battle of Busaco on 27 September 1810, where he was wounded. By 1811, he had gained the rank of Captain in the service of the 15th Light Dragoons. Shortly afterwards he gained the rank of Major in the service of the 41st Foot.
  
  In 1815, Hay was invested as a Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) and held the office of Representative Peer (Scotland) between 1818 and 1876. He was later invested as a Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) in 1820 and held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Haddingtonshire between 1823 and 1876. In 1825, he gained the rank of Colonel also holding the office of Aide-de-Camp to King George IV between 1825 and 1830.
  
  Hay held the office of Aide-de-Camp to King William IV between 1830 and 1837 and gained the rank of Major-General in that same year. By 1854 he attained the rank of General.
  
  Hay was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) as well as being Colonel of the 42nd Foot and holding the office of Gold Stick in Waiting between 1862-3. Between 1863 and 1876 Hay was Colonel of the 2nd Life Guards, gaining the rank of Lieutenant-General in the service of the Royal Company of Archers.
  
  He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1867, made president of the Highland Agricultural Society between 1869 and 1873 and gained the rank of Field Marshal in 1875.
