A pair of early 19th century shell valentines
Twin unglazed octagonal mahogany frames, hinged together with a lock. With symmetrical shell displays in each, including small shells, bolster work and insect chrysalists.

Footnotes

  • Possibly made in the West Indies, or locally, using West Indian shells. The gilded chrysalis are thought to be either Margaradoes Guilding or Margaradoes Guenee.
