Footnotes

  • An important feature for any watch designed with competition sailing in mind is a minute countdown timer to the start of the race. Many manufacturers have offered this complication in different fashions; Rolex with their Yachtmaster range and, more recently, Audemars Piguet with their pieces for Ernesto Bertarelli's Team Alinghi.

In November 1964 Aquastar received a Swiss patent for a "piece of horology allowing the counting of a restricted number of minutes" and in 1965 Heuer became the distributors for Aquastar watches which included a model called the Regate, featuring apertures in the dial that change colour as a 10 minute countdown takes place. Around 1976 Heuer began producing their own model with the complication and much improved movement, followed by a complete redesign in 1983 featuring the Autavia style case shown here.

Representing a novel and useful complication for those involved in competitive sailing, the Regatta is sure to attract attention at Le Port Hercule.
