ALBERTINI (FRANCESCO) Epigrammata antique urbis, 1521
Sold for £6,000 (US$ 10,084) inc. premium
Lot Details
Epigrammata antique urbis, numerous woodcuts of tombs, monuments and funerary inscriptions, one or two just trimmed by the binder, extensive annotations in two sixteenth century hands (one neat and readable, the other sprawling, some of the annotations cut into), bookplate of Earl Fitzwilliam, early eighteenth century English speckled calf, gilt spine, joints cracking [Adams E236, one imperfect copy], folio, Rome, Jacobus Mazochius, 1521

  • The annotations are detailed and learned, the neat hand correcting many of the inscriptions and shewing a considerable knowledge of the field, such as "hoc non est vetus" (fol. 2v), "In hortulo Colotiano ad aquam virginem" (fol. 118v.), and "Non tabula sed ara [an altar] est" (fol. 163r.). The other hand notes words and phrases as if for an index. See illustration overleaf.
