Footnotes

  • An argument against the opinions of William Gager, who in 1608 had publicly defended the idea that it was lawful for husbands to beat their wives. Heale, a Church of England clergyman, opposes the use of violence by men against women whilst still advising that "Wives should love your husbands as the churcch againe loveth Christ".
