Lot Details
BIBLE, in English, Taverner's and Tyndale's version
The Byble, That is to Say, al the Holy Scripture Conteined in the Olde & New Testament, Faythfully Set Forth According to a Coppy of Thomas Matthewes, 5 parts in one vol., black letter, double column, decorative initials, 4 titles within woodcut borders (of 5, lacking that for Joshua to Job, the general title and almanac printed in red and black), lacks 37 leaves (f2 and f5 in Genesis, title to Job, 4P1, and all after 4P3), some headlines and side-notes cropped, woodcut removed from St. John's Gospel on 4G6, loss to leaf I3, a few other small tears, early annotations on blank V4, bound with an incomplete Book of Common Prayer, Richard Grafton, 1552 (STC 16286.3), initials 'E.R.' in margin of general title, modern calf [Herbert 93; STC 2088], folio (270 x 175mm.), John Day, 1551

Footnotes

  • Herbert notes that this edition is not, as stated on the title, a copy the Matthew version. The Old Testament and Apocrypha are a revised editon of Taverner's version (apparently prepared by Edmund Becke), and the New Testament closely resembles Day and Seres' Tyndale Testaments of 1548 and 1551. See illustration overleaf.
