Unique Pair of Rhodochrosite Sconces
By Rick Gregg
A sculptor whose work has been influenced by the simplicity of form and expression found in primitive works, Gregg's work has few embellishments. Since early childhood, nature has been a strong influence in his life: touched by a southwestern landscape of canyons, the colors and textures, primitive glyphs and cave paintings of where he grew up can be seen in his work.
Introduced to metal working at the age of 16, he found that the introduction of other materials expanded his palette. Wood, stone, minerals and glass are integrated into his works.
The present unique pieces incorporate two huge, translucent cross-section slabs of Argentine rhodochrosite (removable from the frame), each measuring approximately 11 1/2 x 9 x 1/4in, now increasingly difficult to obtain, the artist has created a wrought iron sconces for them, with removable light fixtures behind. The wrought iron work is fluid and of organic design, like calligraphy. Height 22in
