Atlas Mountain Quartz Cast on Red Quartz and Amethyst Base
By Leo Atkinson
A self-taught lapidary artist turned sculptor, for Atkinson much of the enjoyment in his art is in procuring the stone with which he works. Stone, for him, represents the most basic and elemental (conscious) form of matter on Earth. In expressing the deep seated need of humans to create, his creative attainment seems to gravitate and attract the "energy" of Minerals and Fossils. As part of his contract with Mother Earth and honoring her, one of his most passionate challenges as an artist is to achieve perfection in form with out destroying any of the essential elements of the intrinsic beauty and component parts of a fossil or mineral specimen.
The present mineralogically fascinating sculpture incorporates a quartz cast from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, of which Atkinson has polished the edges. The obverse of the specimen has amethyst crystals in geode form, the top is removable from the base of ferroginous quartz over amethyst. Height 13in
