Footnotes

  • A versatile scholar in poetry, archaeology, history and the visual arts, Guo Moruo stands as one of the more well-known calligraphers of the twentieth century. His calligraphic style was influenced by Tang dynasty masters but also reflects his study of inscriptions on stone monuments of the earlier Northern dynasties. Guo Moruo held several high positions atop the political hierarchy, and his success as both a government official and accomplished artist is substantiated by the lingering presence of his calligraphy denoting important cultural sites such as the north gate of the Palace Museum in Beijing.
