Footnotes

  • Although often classified as a Shanghai school artist, Ni Tian was a native of Yangzhou and a student of the Yangzhou painter Wang Su (1794-1877). In this composition Ni Tian states in the inscription that his inspiration is another Yangzhou artist, Hua Yan (1682-1762), who was championed not only by Wang Su but by many nineteenth century Shanghai school artists such as the Four Rens, underscoring the important artistic connection between Yangzhou and Shanghai in Qing dynasty painting.
