Ink and color on paper, album of eight leaves, each inscribed, one leaf signed and dated Tongzhi jisi (1869), each leaf with a seal of the artist, and two collectors seals reading Cao Zhongying yin.

  • Tao Tao was a native of Suzhou but was active in Shanghai with the majority of his dated works from the last decades of the nineteenth century. Originally inspired by Dong Qichang (1555-1636), his later landscapes are influenced by the Four Rens. For a biography see Steven Little, ed. New Songs on Ancient Tunes, Honolulu, 2007.
