Ink and color on paper, a continuous scene mounted as four hanging scrolls, inscribed and signed Yuan Ying, followed with two square relief seals of the artist reading Chen, and Ying.

  • Yuan Ying specialized in the painting of landscapes and flowers, and was active in the Ruyiguan at the Qianlong court between the years 1765-1785, serving the Inner Palace upon the recommendation of Li Yinpei. He was originally from Yuanhe, Jiangsu Province and used the zi Jinhua and hao Erfeng. His long service to the emperor is evinced by his extent works in the National Palace Museum Taipei, including three hanging scrolls and an album, and several extant works in the Palace Museum Beijing. Yuan Ying was also one of several artists that contributed paintings that adorn the buildings in the Qianlong emperor's retirement garden in the northeast corner of the Forbidden City, see Nancy Berliner, The Emperor's Private Paradise Treasures from the Forbidden City, 2010
