Lohans Crossing the Sea
Ink on silk, hand scroll, bearing a signature reading Fanlong, mounted together with a title in clerical script inscribed Tong Deng Jue An and signed Lan Ying (1585-c.1664) followed by one seal reading Lan Ying, followed by two colophons, one bearing a signature of Chen Jiru (1558-1639).

  • Fanlong was a monk active in the first half of the twelfth century. Originally from Wuxing, Zhejiang, he was known to have painted in the baimiao style of Li Gonglin (1040-1106). A handscroll of Sixteen lohans, also attributed to Fanlong is in the collection of the Freer Gallery, Washington, D.C.
