Footnotes

  • A nephew of Wang Yuanqi (1642-1715), Wang Xuehao was an heir to the orthodox tradition of early Qing dynasty painting and calligraphy. Drawing inspiration from the Four Wangs and Dong Qichang (1555-1636), Wang Xuehao would influence later painters and calligraphers in the conservative tradition. For more on his career, see Claudia Brown and Ju-Hsi Chou, Transcending Turmoil: Painting at the Close of China's Empire, 1796-1911, Phoenix, 1992, pp. 43-44.
