Footnotes

  • Zhai Yunsheng (Shuntang, Wenquan) was born in 1776 in Laizhou, and he received his jinshi degree in 1822. Highly regarded as a paleographer and as an authority on clerical script calligraphy, he authored or compiled several texts including Wujing suibian zhaijiao shu san zhong 五經歲徧齋校書三種 (1832-1848), and Li Pian 隸篇 (1837-1838). In this set of four hanging scrolls he extracts a section of Lu Ji's (206-303) Wenfu (Rhapsody on Literature), one of the most important essays of early Chinese literary theory. Originally written between the years 280-300, the essay touches on such themes as the writer's craft and inspiration.
